Southern Turkey

A 2-hour flight to S. Turkey for $150 and then a nightmarish ride through the mountains. Here we're travelling in an old Mercedes to Knidos.

Oh look! Here comes a bulldozer! Next we'll get blocked by some goats or something.

A bunch of old rocks, according to a Turkish friend.

Years later on a trip to Perge, I latched on to a group of Germans (see right of photo). At each sight, the group would stop and each person would give a short lecture on the historical and cultural significance of each item. Gypsies often approached selling Roman coins or lace embroidery. Even the littlest ones could harrass you in several languages. Come to think of it, that does just look like a pile of old rocks. I guess I should have had one of the Germans fill me in on its importance.

The Library at Ephesus, ancient Greek city of the New Testament. It was brutally hot that day, but the sea along the was a brilliant blue and made for a beatiful ride to and from Ephesus. We were staying in Datca on the Southwest Coast of Turkey.

Bathrooms with plumbing. Who says they didn't have modern conveniences? Wouldn't you like to use such a facility?

The Great Theater of Ephesus, seated 20,000 and is still occasionally used. When I was later living in Istanbul, I watched on TV a concert by Sting in the theater.
