First trip to Germany with visits to Paris, Berlin and Cologne.

The area I visited is marked by a blue box.
Almost to Denmark, north of the Netherlands,
east of England and bordering on one side on the North Sea.

I finally made it to Northern Germany. Here's a traditional N. German thatched-roof house, good against rain. Molfsee Open-air Museum, Kiel.

The duplex I stayed in with a family led back through lush gardens to a small lake, the Wittensee.

A typical German kitchen. Notice the size of the refrigerator and the bread box next to it. Various appliances.

Riding through town on a bike or driving along small roads, you'd occasionally go through a small village and see such houses.

A beautiful field with a windmill in the background, seen on a bike ride on one of the many excellent bike paths one finds in Germany.

Old-fashioned windmill at the Molfsee Museum.

The interior workings of a windmill.

Swans on the lake. Hanging out on the dock and bike-riding around the lake were always enjoyable.

The dock, the swans and the reeds used for roofing. I jumped in once and that was enough! Brrgh!

I took the family Passat wagon over 100mph to Hamburg to watch Hamburg (HSV) defeat Bremen.

A Northern German hazhard - boats blocking the road. Note the Green Police car. Eckernförde was about 30 minutes away by bike. Too cold to swim in the Baltic, I just rode around town observing Germans in their natural habitat.

The North Sea's Watt Nature Reserve (official site) - the tide goes out and Germans go stomp around in the mud (healthy!) and looking at shells and whatever else is left in the tide pools. Some visitors have failed to observe the gradual return of the sea and have met with misfortune.

Big sky over the Watt. Looking back towards shore, you can see the earthen dikes.

Here's the water mark, which means that the water was once at that level but has of course gone out with the tide. Sea shells and rocks left behind.

This picture gives you an idea of how high the marker is with yours truly standing next to it.

Das ist ja gesund! How healthy to stomp around in the mud! Very thick and oily.
